The 1,800 men and women of UA Local 496 Plumbers & Pipefitters are sitting pretty – right in the centre of the second largest industrial construction boom in recent North American history.
Over the past 10 years or so, the city of Calgary has seen some very large commercial and institutional construction projects, like the $1 Billion, 60-storey The Bow office building we're working on now. And our members have always been able to work on Alberta Oil Sands projects through our sister Local in northern Alberta. Our members have rarely been idle.
But now, within a short radius of Calgary itself, there are up to 40 – yes, FORTY! – major electrical cogeneration plants that are either underway or planned for construction in the next 10 years or so, including a $3 Billion power plant right on the boundary of our modern, cosmopolitan city of 1,000,000!
A big chunk of that work will be ours. And once they're built, each of those plants will need to be maintained and repaired over many decades of service.
Like all unions, many of our existing members are retiring. We're going to lose 250 or so in the next five years alone.
Bottom line is that we need you if you're qualified, experienced, safe and motivated to deliver a fair day's work for very excellent pay and benefits.
There's a bright future for you in Calgary and Southern Alberta.
Come build it – with your brothers and sisters in Local 496!
